The Abduction of Dirant Mello Ferraz

The Abduction of Dirant Mello Ferraz

By Cole Herrold

On February 28, 1974, at 7:30 pm 18-year-old Dirant Mello Ferraz was at home standing in the service area in his kitchen when all of a sudden he was no longer at home and “somewhere else”. This strange place he found himself in was a square room about 16ft by 13ft and the color of smoked glass with no windows or doors. The ceiling of the room was oddly shaped as it appeared to be almost funnel-like. Before he could wonder how he got to this location he heard a voice that filled the room in an incredibly loud fashion which said, “keep calm we are your friends!”. Dirant looked for some person or just where the voice was coming from and was able to find a small device that was box-shaped with a red blinking light in one corner of the room. Upon inspecting the object, he at first thought that it might be a tape recorder, but this proved to not be the case as later he was certain it was some sort of translating device. The next thing Dirant realized was that the wall in front of him opened up and a strange oval-shaped object of the same color as everything else around him. This object came towards him, and a yellow light came down onto him for a few seconds from the center of the ceiling. He once again heard a voice coming into the room again trying to keep the young man calm. Then the egg-shaped machine opened and out stepped a double of himself. The voice from the tape recorder-like object spoke again and asked Dirant to touch this doppelganger and upon doing so he felt that the body was made of actual flesh. Afterward, the mirror Dirant proceeded to pat him on the back and said in a voice identical to his “keep calm! Wish me a good journey, for I do not intend to harm anybody.” Then the double disappeared through the wall and a large panel that resembled the front of a tv set appeared in the area where his copy had passed. And through it Dirant now watched his “other self” in his own home.

Yet as Dirant watched his replica-self interact with the people around him he discovered that while the being looked identical to him behaviorally this being was much different than him. This entity was gruff and noticeably unfamiliar with how finances worked, nor could this copy write. This gruffness was expressed to Dirant’s sister first and she immediately was shocked and recognized how different he was. Following this, the family’s driver who worked for Dirant’s family’s firm had come to pick Dirant up to take him to visit clients and this same gruffness was exchanged to him as well. During this trip, Dirant watched through the screen as the being asked an employee to write out an invoice for him something that all who saw Dirant at the time knew he knew how to do. Dirant discovered that the double possessed the ability to go through walls even outside the room as on one occasion the entity proceeded in passing through the walls behind one of the firm's employees a man named Arnobro and the man not realizing he was behind him was frightened when he suddenly materialized. Yet to the touch, the double seemed to be very much flesh and blood.  Dirant was asked by the strange voice that spoke into the room to assist his “other self” by means of the tv like screen. The effect of this was that he had the sensation as it were of looking through his replica’s eyes. At times Dirant felt that he was physically above the double when he was advising him how to act. Yet this jiminy cricket type consultation would not be constant as at times the tv screen and Dirant’s access to the double would occasionally be shut off. On one occasion the double walked off from Dirant’s house in the evening and did not return until the next morning. On another occasion, the double while riding in the car with the family driver forced the driver to pull over to the side of the road. The double then proceeded to get out of the car and then entered the Quinta Da Boa Vista forest. Dirant never discovered what his double had done during these time frames but during the times when he was able to see the double but could not aid it the being seemed to be concerned with the welfare of plants and trees as at one point the double mended a broken bough of a tree. The double also at times behaved like a tourist at one point the entity was seen taking pictures of the Niteroi Bridge near Rio de Janeiro with a camera similar to Dirant’s Kodak.

During the time of Dirant’s abduction, he sat in the room which had a bed, chair, and shelf that gave some semblance of comfort. During his time in the room, he felt neither tired nor hungry or thirsty. He would lie on the bed fixed to the wall during the moments when he was bored or when the screen was off and there next to him was a kind of shelf that he would move the stool towards. Dirant during these moments of boredom soon desired something to read and suddenly the shelf's border began to light up and up one at a time popped various reading materials. There was a newspaper, several books, and interestingly a spider-man comic that had not been published yet. Each time a reading material manifested the shelf lit up once more. Dirant at one point wanted some company specifically some company from his girlfriend who lived in Bahia. Around this time a letter from her had reached his home and the double proceeded in picking it up and instantly it came up on the shelf. During this time in which the Double was unable to be seen Dirant proceeded to ask his captors some questions. “Why do you want me?” he had asked first and the reply through the strange box-like device was “We need to conclude some tests. We do not harm anybody. The less you say about this the better, however, we should like to make it known that we are friendly and only wish to help.” Dirant followed this answer by asking “Who are you and what is your world like?” The box replied, “We cannot tell you who we are and our world is very different from yours”. Dirant then replied “You are asking me to help. How can I do so when you are invading our world?” The voice then replied, “No, we are not invaders. We work for the good of the human race itself”. Dirant then asked “What made you choose me?” the being replied, “You are different from the others and have feelings similar to ours”. Dirant soon began to wonder how long he would spend in this room and asked “How will you nourish me, how shall I get food?” the being replied, “you are not going to feel hungry here, on this ship”. Dirant seeing this as the moment to ask possibly significant cosmic questions asked his captors “Do you know about God (the existence of)?” the entity responded saying “Clearly so, of course. He is everywhere. Everybody knows him”. On the following day, Dirant noticed that his watch had stopped working and asked the beings why this was. The box replied, “on this ship nothing will work”. Dirant then began to inquire about his double and asked “What or who is this other who has replaced me?” the beings responded by saying “He is an image that can be touched. Inside him there is one of ourselves and a recording of your mind”.

Dirant had spent a total of 24 hours in the strange room and finally returned home on February 28th at 7:30 pm. When Dirant returned home his watch returned to life some 7.31 seconds after he had arrived there and Dirant soon began telling his family about what happened to him. While his family noticed that his attitude and overall behavior had changed the story he told proved to fall on deaf ears as none seemed to believe him. Yet from them, he was able to learn some further things that the double had done in his absence such as when the double left during the night he discovered that it took a taxi and on its way back to the home the being found a lady’s purse. The being proceeded to after checking the bag and finding her address to return the bag to her. Dirant upon returning home also proceeded to investigate and check to see if everything his double had done did actually happen. A few days later he checked to see if the double did return the bag and he found indeed this did occur, he had also found the mended bough that his double had as well as that some objects were taken from his home and the area such as Dirants books on Brazilian History, science, geography, his newspapers, some flowers, a card, some photos of Rio de Janeiro, and some prospectus leaflets of Dirant’s family’s firm. Dirant was eventually interviewed by ufologist Fernando Cleto Nunes Pereira and later by Irene Granchi on November 16, 1986, when Dirant was in his early 30s. Dirant prior to Granchi’s interview said that “people will not believe my story, but I would like you to publish their statement: “We are friends and only wish to help””. By the time Granchi interviewed Dirant, Dirant had been married and became a successful businessman with his own firm which manufactured medical equipment, and had since wanted to forget about his abduction.

Some of Dirants experiences are similar to other abductees such as Senhora Luli Oswald and Onilson Patero as well as other cases involving multiple human cloned bodies such as David Huggins. It also bears to mention the possibility that the entire Men in Black and Grinning Men type of ET/Paranormal Entity could be an extension of this type of encounter. In those cases namely those chronicled by Keel. MIBs behave strangely they have no concept of how certain things work such as the case of the MIB trying to drink Jell-o, or the MIB who ordered a steak only to abruptly leave after saying he was from somewhere else. There are also similarities to the concept of a changeling a faerie sent and switched for a human child perhaps that was a precursor to this phenomenon.
