Medford Flying Lizard Man

by Cole Herrold

Reptilian cryptids are a surprisingly common phenomena. They have been reported in almost every state from New Jersey to California, and most of their appearances are very uniform, implying they are one in the same species. However, as with all lifeforms, there are examples of diversity that seem to go far and beyond what the novice would consider to be relatability. Near the city of Medford, one of the most unique variations of this kind of cryptid was reported; the creature looked very much like the typical reptoid with one major difference it had on its back, a pair of large leathery wings.

It was in July of 1996 when one of the most bizarre reptilian reports would occur with one of the most reputable witnesses to come forward with their account. While the official name of the witnesses is not revealed, what is revealed is that the first sighting of what has become known as the Medford Lizard Man or the Highway 13 Reptile Man was seen by a warden for Wisconsin's Department for Natural Resources (DNS). His account adds a patina of extra intrigue due to his occupation. The warden was travelling south down Highway 13 late one night when his attention was drawn to a strange figure that appeared to be standing in the middle of the road. The warden stared at the dark form attempting to make out who and what the individual was doing. The warden came closer and closer to the figure, getting so close that he almost hit the bizarre form. In the glowing headlights, the warden realized to his horror that the figure was not a human as he had previously thought but instead a repulsive reptilian that loomed large over his car. The creature had shiny green scaly skin and was 6 to 7ft tall. The size itself would have been alarming enough, but unlike other bizarre creature accounts, the creature was not facing towards the woods but instead was staring right at the driver. This supernatural stare down gave the warden more details to the creature's form as the creature's humanoid form, while covered in scales, had human-like arms and legs with long claws on the hands and feet. The warden, still slowing down as he continued to make eye contact with the bizarre beast's would come to be even more surprised as the reptilian unfurled a large 10-12ft pair of wings and flew straight up over the warden's car. The warden reeling from his sighting had thought that this was the last he would have seen the creature, but as he looked in his rearview mirror, he saw the winged weirdo descend in an unnatural way and land behind the car, still staring at the warden as he sped off into the night.

The bizarre creature was never seen again by the civil servant, at least from what has been recorded by the warden. However, the flying fiend was not done on Highway 13 as a short time later, it would make a resurgence to a group of people. It was once again on a dark night that a truckload of highway workers would have an almost identical account as the group travelling down the desolate stretch of road. In an almost parallel scene, the group of workers saw a bizarre figure standing on the road; as they approached the figure, they could tell that this figure was not human and that its appearance matched that of what was sighted by the warden, being that it was a tall shiny green-skinned figure that looked like a lizard man. The figure was facing the truck staring at the crew when just like in the warden's case, a pair of large wings unfurled from the creatures back, and it flew off into the woodlands where it landed onto a tree branch and continued to watch the crew as they drove by.

While the Highway 13 workers were the last report of what has become known as the Medford Lizard Man, the area around Medford was not done with bizarre lizard monster reports. In La Crosse, during the same decade as the Medford sightings, a father and son, while out looking for their dog, would have an encounter with a creature dubbed as the La Crosse Lizard Man. The La Crosse Lizard Man was seen as the father and son approached a riverbank and where the creature was seen on the opposite side of the bank. The creature's appearance was slightly different than that seen in Medford as the creature's skin was dark brown in color, and that it was missing the infamous wings seen in the Highway 13 cases.

Lizardman cases are while fairly common, especially in recent years thanks to the removal of a lot of the stigma regarding coming forward about these accounts; they are a lot harder to swallow compared to a living relict species such as what Champ or even Bigfoot is supposed to be. While bipedal dinosaurs did exist, they were not built in the upright posture like a man as the lizardmen sightings are supposed to be. So, we have nothing in the fossil record that we could pinpoint as being the ancestor of this creature or being the obvious suspect for the sighting. Now there was a thought experiment that did hypothesize if dinosaurs continued to evolve how they would look, and interestingly, the model known as the dinosauroid is, in fact, very similar to how reptilians are reported to look. The obvious problem with this hypothesis is the model ancestor that the dinosauroid is supposed to of originated from is the Troodon, and back then, it was not readily accepted that dinosaurs had feathers which we now know they did so unless it would prove advantageous to lose that feature the dinosauroid model should have feathers which of course implies that there should be more reports of birdmen as opposed to lizardmen.

While there are some problems with the obvious existence of this creature, it would be unscientific to just dismiss the accounts off-hand, instead of analyzing the possibilities of what this creature could be is the best way to try to rationalize this creature. With this creature, the first step is to view it biologically. It has a very biological appearance with the scales and appearance even its behavior is very similar to known animals. Animals will utilize highways for a variety of reasons, the big factor being the ability to maneuver from one section of the forest to the next easily. Another more interesting factor is that roads take in heat and the fact that the creature if it is a true reptile it would have an ectothermic body temperature, so a road would be very much like a giant heating rock which could explain why both sightings occurred on Highway 13. A lot of this points to a flesh and blood reptile. Now the obvious problems with this being a biological creature is that one, as mentioned earlier, it does not have a known ancestor or answer to how they came around and two, as stated with other flying humanoids, the creature's wings double up as a second set of arms and hands just modified for flight something that we have never seen in the known evolutionary database.

Now the second possibility of what this creature might be venturing off the trail of earthbound cryptozoology and into the far off reaches of ufology. While there was no interconnected UFOs or anomalous lights seen in the sky while the Medford sightings occurred, the description of the Medford flying humanoid matches a race of extraterrestrial alleged to of interacting with humans. The Alpha Draconians are a race of reptilian extraterrestrials that have been described as both winged and double-winged tend to be the leaders of the other reptilian extraterrestrials. They allegedly are from Alpha Draconis and are claimed to be about 15-20 ft tall. Now while there is a rich pre-David Icke history of reptilian encounters with both abductees and eyewitnesses, which do add a layer of authenticity to such reports, there is also the inescapable David Icke conspiracies and lore which even have made their way into the works of Nick Redfern and MUFON. The theories, while not impossible, are incredibly unlikely and are almost like the Book of Mormon compared to the Torah and Biblical texts of classical Ufological works. So, while not impossible are much less so than a cryptozoological answer. A second subset to the extraterrestrial hypothesis of the Alpha Draconians is that they are not only extraterrestrials but also interdimensional entities.

Going further from extraterrestrial and even interdimensional is the possibility that this creature might be something demonic. In many supernatural oriented researchers, they feel that the reptilians are demonic entities and a direct connection to both the serpent in the Garden of Eden and the Red Dragon in the Book of Revelation. The fact that the Medford Lizard Man had wings and is a reptile-like creature would fit into this thought process. Now outside of a physical comparison to this kind of phenomenon, there is nothing that hints that the Medford accounts are some kind of supernatural entity. The creature did not disappear in plain sight or do anything particular malevolent or even wielded some sort of pitchfork, so nothing really to make this hypothesis the primary one.

Reptilians are a unique group of creatures and, for the researcher, an incredibly confusing and difficult species to classify for; unlike Bigfoot, where it most certainly is a biological cryptid from Earth, there is historically an even amount of both extraterrestrial and cryptozoological accounts. While I tend to lean more towards earth-oriented mystery animals as the answer to these phenomena, I can not ignore the alleged alternative accounts, even of the David Icke variety. Yet while one can speculate till their blue in the face as to the hows, whys, and what's of this creature, we are left with no definitive answer as to the truth of the creature. As with almost all cryptid sightings, these enigmatic encounters will most likely continue to exist in the annals of mystery until one is either shot, captured, hit by a car, or seen on our televisions shaking hands with the president.
